Subproject C03 Tool wear protection

The objectives of this subproject are the identification and characterization of wear mechanisms in an oxygen-free atmosphere as well as a targeted research and design of tribological systems with the help of wear protection layers. In this context, selected exemplary tools of cutting and forming technology will be considered. The focus of the investigations is to develope a detailed understanding of the effect mechanisms that govern wear behaviour of coating systems, which have not been taken into consideration up to now due to their high oxidative wear. For this purpose, mechanisms for carbide- and nitride- based material systems such as SIC or DLC under XHV-adequate atmosphere are considered.
